Antes de fallecer, McCain dejó expresamente indicado que no quería que el presidente asistiera. No es sorpresa que lo excluyera, dado que Trump ofendió su condición de prisionero de guerra y tenía con él muchas diferencias ideológicas.
Este sábado, los expresidentes Obama, Clinton y Bush, así como el exvicepresidente Joe Biden, encabezaron la ceremonia en la catedral reforzando el mensaje bipartidista que McCain quiso que prevaleciera en Washington DC después de su partida.
Trump no solo estuvo ausente de las exequias, sino que ha estado fuera de Washington DC asistiendo a una mezcla de asuntos de gobierno y promoción para la todavía lejana campaña de reelección.
Este sábado se fue a su resort en Sterling, Virginia, a jugar golf.

En sus publicaciones en Twitter, Trump se expresó contra los medios de comunicación, dijo que ama Canadá "¡pero se han aprovechado de nuestro país durante muchos años!" y de la Ley de Vigilancia de la Inteligencia Extranjera (FISA por sus siglas en inglés).
Todo esto ocurría mientras transcurría la procesión desde el Capitolio hasta la Catedral Nacional de Washington y el cortejo realizaba una parada en el Memorial de los Veteranos de Vietnam, donde Cindy McCain puso una corona de flores para honrar a los que perdieron la vida durante la guerra.
