Just before beginning treatment for sickle cell anaemia, a 13 year old in Belgium had one of her ovaries removed. Doctors were very skeptical and questioned if she would ever experience a pregnancy. The now 27 year old, became the first woman to conceive through the use of transplanted ovarian tissue.

When her first ovary was removed, the remaining one was very damaged. However, in hopes of future scientific advances, scientists froze part of her ovarian tissue. The woman, who prefers to remain anonymous ―was diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia at the age of five.
Just before receiving a bone marrow transplant from her brother, doctors knew that chemotherapy could help stop the spread of cancer throughout her body. At the time the procedure was conducted, the woman was showing sings of puberty, but had not experienced any menstrual cycles. Sadly at 15 her remaining ovary failed and all hopes went down the drain.

Hope become more than a wish
10 years after the procedure, the woman decided that she wanted to birth a baby. Doctors then grafted 4 of her ovarian fragments onto the remaining ovary. But this isn’t all, specialists also grafted 11 other ovarian fragments in different areas of her body.
Soon after, the women began to menstruate and became pregnant naturally at the age of 27. Doctors are now looking into this case, as it could help other women who may have gone through a similar medical problems.
