With Thanksgiving just weeks away, it is very possible that you will have houseguests in the form of family coming your way very soon. This can be a pretty stressful ordeal on top of preparing for two major holidays. Here are a few tips for keeping your sanity when family comes to stay.
Guard Your Space
If you’ve been kind enough to open your home to family members over the holidays you must be clear about which space is off limits. You need a haven for when your guests become too much. And, even the most considerate guests can become too much at times. Keep your bedroom and one bathroom (if you are lucky enough to have two) off limits. This will allow you a place to go when cousin Eddie wants to discuss his views on the coming election.
This is not to say that you have to accompany your family on said outings. Encourage them to do some of the touristy things that out-of-towers love. Make the excuse that you’ve been many times and you’d love them to experience your city on their own. You could even go so far as to book a few excursions before they come. Don’t overdo it, though. Otherwise, they might sense you’re trying to keep them busy.
Cook in Advance
Unfortunately, you are going to feel obligated to feed these people. They are your family, after all. Make some meals beforehand so that you’re not spending more time at the stove than needed. Crockpot meals are perfectly acceptable and so is the occasional take-out meal.
Lower Your Standards, Seriously
When you add to the number of people that are living in your home you’re simply going to have to drop your standards of cleanliness and order. If you’re not worried about those two things, than great, carry on. If your towels are folded just so, listen up. You’re going to have to let that go, at least a little, for a short while.
If you are a regular reader, you might have to check the byline on this article one more time. Surely, she didn’t just tell us to drink less? Didn’t she just encourage us to add more wine to our holidays? Yes, it’s true, this is contrary to the advice you might expect, but you should hold back on the alcohol or else emotions may be intensified and who knows where that can lead when it comes to family.
Despite the fact that we love our family, things can get a little more complicated once we are all under one roof. Take precautions to ensure your time with holiday houseguests is best spent.
