With autumn comes cooler weather. What better way to warm up then with a delicious cup of creamy hot cocoa? This recipe is easy enough to make with your children. Bringing your children into the kitchen with you is so important. It teaches them life skills such as measuring, cooking, and cleaning. Sometimes it’s easier to do it yourself. On the other hand, when you slow down and involve your children in the process it can be used as a teachable moment and a great way to bond as a family.
Now on to the recipe. Who wouldn’t love this hot drink after coming in from playing outside? Instead of using the instant packets, create your own cup of hot cocoa at home with this simple yet mouthwatering recipe.
Here are the ingredients you will need:
½ cup sugar
¼ cup cocoa powder
⅓ cup boiling water
3 ½ cups milk (whole or a milk substitute like almond milk)
½ cup half and half cream
¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Spice up your hot cocoa with these optional ingredients:
- Miniature marshmallows
- Whipped cream
- Cinnamon & nutmeg
- Maple syrup
- Dark Chocolate shavings
- Caramel Sauce
- Peppermint stick
Step by Step directions to cook your own hot chocolate at home:
- Mix together the sugar, cocoa, and salt in a saucepan. Stir in the water and cook over medium heat. Bring the mixture to an easy boil and stir for about 2 minutes.
- Next, slowly mix in the milk. Turn the heat to simmer and warm milk. Be sure the milk doesn’t boil.
- Remove the mixture from heat and add the vanilla. Divide into mugs and serve with optional ingredients if desired.
