WASHINGTON, D.C.— A menos de un mes de que el Distrito de Columbia sea sede de la primera carrera de la serie IndyCar en sus calles, autoridades locales y federales anunciaron un amplio operativo de seguridad que incluirá cierres de calles, restricciones de estacionamiento y modificaciones al tránsito desde julio y hasta mediados de septiembre.

El Freedom 250 Grand Prix, programado para el 22 y 23 de agosto de 2026, forma parte de las celebraciones por los 250 años de la independencia de Estados Unidos y se desarrollará en el área del National Mall y el centro de la capital.

La alcaldesa Muriel Bowser dijo que la ciudad espera recibir a cientos de miles de espectadores y pidió a residentes y visitantes planificar sus desplazamientos con anticipación.
Habrá restricciones desde julio y hasta septiembre
Las afectaciones al tránsito comenzaron semanas antes del evento para permitir la instalación de infraestructura y continuarán después de la carrera mientras se desmonta el circuito.
Entre el 22 de julio y el 14 de agosto, así como del 24 de agosto al 3 de septiembre, permanecerán cerrados carriles de estacionamiento, carriles laterales y algunos carriles de circulación en distintas calles del recorrido. Las vías permanecerán abiertas, aunque con capacidad reducida.
Del 12 de julio al 15 de septiembre estará prohibido estacionarse en:
- 3rd Street, entre Constitution Avenue NW e Independence Avenue SW.
- 7th Street, entre Madison Drive NW e Independence Avenue SW.
Primeras calles completamente cerradas
Del 20 de julio al 3 de septiembre permanecerán cerradas al tránsito vehicular, además de contar con restricciones de estacionamiento:
- 4th Street, entre Pennsylvania Avenue NW e Independence Avenue SW.
- Madison Drive, entre 7th Street y 3rd Street NW.
- Jefferson Drive, entre 7th Street y 3rd Street SW.
Solo se permitirá el acceso local para entregas y empleados de los museos.
Aumentan las restricciones a partir del 1 de agosto
Desde el 1 de agosto se prohibirá estacionarse en:
- Pennsylvania Avenue, entre 10th Street y 3rd Street NW.
- Constitution Avenue, entre 9th Street y Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
- 6th Street, entre Pennsylvania Avenue y Constitution Avenue NW.
- 7th Street, entre Pennsylvania Avenue y Madison Drive NW.
- Independence Avenue, entre 7th Street y 3rd Street SW.
- Maryland Avenue, entre Independence Avenue y 3rd Street SW.
Además, entre el 1 y el 26 de agosto permanecerá cerrado el carril norte de 9th Street, entre Constitution Avenue y Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
Entre el 11 de agosto y el 3 de septiembre, Constitution Avenue, entre Pennsylvania Avenue y 3rd Street NW, permanecerá completamente cerrada y sin estacionamiento.
Habrá cierres nocturnos durante la instalación del circuito
Las autoridades también anunciaron cierres temporales de 8 pm a 6 am en distintas fechas para instalar infraestructura.
Las afectaciones incluyen:
- 1 de agosto: 9th Street, entre Constitution Avenue y Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
- 2 y 3 de agosto: 7th Street, entre Pennsylvania Avenue NW e Independence Avenue SW.
- 4 de agosto: 3rd Street, entre Pennsylvania Avenue NW e Independence Avenue SW.
- Del 7 al 9 de agosto: Pennsylvania Avenue, entre 10th Street y 3rd Street NW.
- 11 y 12 de agosto: Independence Avenue, entre 7th Street y 3rd Street SW.
Tras cada cierre nocturno, las calles reabrirán con un número reducido de carriles.
La zona del National Mall será la más afectada
Entre el 14 de agosto y el 3 de septiembre aumentarán significativamente las restricciones.
Las calles con prohibición de estacionamiento incluyen:
- 7th Street (D Street-Pennsylvania Avenue NW).
- Indiana Avenue (7th Street-6th Street NW).
- 6th Street (D Street-Pennsylvania Avenue NW).
- Madison Drive (14th Street-7th Street NW).
- Jefferson Drive (14th Street-7th Street NW).
- 12th Street (Constitution Avenue-Madison Drive NW).
- 12th Street (Jefferson Drive-Independence Avenue SW).

El fin de semana de la carrera habrá cierres masivos
Entre el 21 de agosto a las 3 am y el 23 de agosto a las 11:59 pm, el operativo alcanzará su mayor magnitud.
Además de restricciones de estacionamiento en más de veinte calles del centro y del suroeste de Washington, permanecerán completamente cerradas vías como:
- 12th Street (Pennsylvania Avenue-Constitution Avenue NW).
- E Street (11th-8th Street NW).
- 7th Street (E Street-D Street NW).
- Indiana Avenue (6th Street-D Street NW).
- 5th Street (E Street-D Street NW).
- Indiana Avenue/D Street (6th-3rd Street NW).
- 2nd Street (Constitution Avenue-C Street NW).
- C Street (2nd-First Street NW).
- First Street (C Street-Constitution Avenue NW).
- Louisiana Avenue (First Street-D Street NW).
- New Jersey Avenue (D Street-Louisiana Avenue NW).

Autoridades anuncian amplio despliegue de seguridad
Las autoridades informaron que el evento contará con un operativo conjunto encabezado por la Policía Metropolitana de Washington (MPD), el Servicio Secreto, el FBI, la Policía de Parques de Estados Unidos y otras agencias federales.
El jefe interino de la Policía Metropolitana, Jeffrey W. Carroll, afirmó que el departamento operará "a plena capacidad" durante todo el fin de semana y aseguró que los residentes seguirán recibiendo el mismo nivel de servicio policial.
El subdirector del Servicio Secreto, Matthew Quinn, informó que habrá una fuerte presencia de agentes uniformados, detectores de metales en los puntos de acceso y una política de bolsas transparentes.
El agente especial a cargo de la oficina del FBI en Washington, Phillip E. Bates, dijo que actualmente no existe ninguna amenaza creíble contra el evento. También recordó que el uso de drones estará prohibido.
Autoridades recomiendan usar transporte público
Los organizadores informaron que el sistema Metro ampliará su servicio de ser necesario para atender la demanda de pasajeros.

El Departamento de Policía Metropolitana recordó que todos los vehículos estacionados en zonas con señalización temporal de Emergency No Parking serán multados y remolcados.
Asimismo, exhortó a los asistentes a reportar cualquier situación sospechosa bajo el lema "If you see something, say something", llamar al 911 en caso de emergencia y seguir las instrucciones de los agentes durante el evento.
El presidente del Freedom 250 Grand Prix, Bud Denker, afirmó que los organizadores cubrirán la mayor parte de los costos de preparación y restauración de las calles. También señaló que los monoplazas podrán alcanzar velocidades cercanas a las 185 millas por hora y aseguró que las 288,000 entradas solicitadas para el evento ya se agotaron. Agregó que esperan que el impacto económico supere los 105 millones de dólares que generan anualmente carreras similares en Detroit.
Las autoridades advirtieron que todos los horarios y cierres pueden modificarse dependiendo de las condiciones operativas y recomendaron a conductores consultar rutas alternas antes de ingresar al centro de Washington durante las semanas previas y el fin de semana de la carrera.
