“We’re disrupting the traditional school paradigm”: this Mexican educator in Chicago uses an innovative approach to teach her students

When Claudia Vázquez arrived to the United States she was undocumented and thought that going to college was an unattainable dream. Years later, she was able to legalize her status and be the first in her family to receive a college degree. She now teaches at the Santiago Acero K-8 school, in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in Chicago, where she teaches children to know and accept their strengths and weaknesses. Her goal is to ensure that other immigrant families have the information they need so their children can receive a high-quality education.
