Hurricane Andrew photos: The storm no one in Florida will forget
Florida Governor Rick Scott assured that "Irma is bigger and stronger than Andrew," and asked citizens to be prepared. Twenty-five years ago Andrew affected about 730,000 homes and buildings in the state, especially in the city of Homestead, south of Miami.
During the night of August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew hit south Florida, causing unprecedented damage. Homestead, in south Miami, was hit hardest. Andrew caused 26 deaths and left 250,000 people wihout homes.

If a similar hurricane were to hit today at the same point, it would be far more catastrophic. Damages would exceed 100 billion, according to a recent analysis by insurance firm Swiss Re.
