The 29th annual Premio Lo Nuestro awards took place in Miami on Thursday night and we're proud to say a lot of artists called for Latino unity and pride, giving the evening an overall tone of empowerement, especially for inmigrants everywhere.
Top 5 moments of Premio Lo Nuestro 2017
Romeo Santos, Romeo Santos flying, Prince Royce, J Balvin and more Romeo Santos are basically our highlights.
There were a lot of amazing musical highlights too. Here we round up our top 5 (see all of our coverage, in Spanish here):
1- When Prince Royce presented Romeo Santos with the 'Premio a la Excelencia' award
The night's top honor went to the king of bachata, and who else to present the award to Santos than his heir apparent, Prince Royce. That was a bold move by the show and the superstars themselves, who everybody loves to pit against each other. There's enough space in bachata music for everyone, OK? Now, we'd like to see that long-awaited collaboration. Will it happen?
2- Romeo debuts his new single on live television and flies off stage
His new song is called 'Héroe favorito' and alas, at the end of his performance Romeo took a beautiful woman (a venezuelan actress Fefi Oliveira) and literally flew up in the air. Just another day in Romeo's world. We can't wait to hear more from his forthcoming album, Golden, which will be the first album in 3 years for the CEO of Roc Nation Latin.
3- Thalia goes all Beyoncé for her performance
We're talking bejeweled bodysuit, sultry hair flowing in the wind thanks to strategically-placed fans and some tight booty shaking. Thalía pulled off a flawless performance of 'Todavía te quiero' with De La Ghetto, proving she's hotter than ever.
4- CNCO win their first Premio Lo Nuestro ever
The boy band won 'Pop-Rock Song of the Year' with their ‘Tan fácil’ and were so excited, they dragged their mentor and La Banda judge Ricky Martin with them onstage. CNCO also performed a medley of 'Tu luz' and 'Reggaeton Lento', so it was a really good night for the band.
5- J Balvin shuts down his haters with an inspiring speech about staying true to oneself
The reggaeton star has come under fire for being an uncoventional Latino urban artist (read: not macho enough), one who doesn't flaunt his women bling, or cars, but instead dyes his hair rainbow, likes to meditate and to hang out with Karl Lagerfield at New York Fashion Week. Balvin was loud and clear with his message of tolerance and self-acceptance to his fans: "Keep going, fight for what you want, and do whatever you want. If you want to dye your hair, do it, if you want to wear a skirt, do it' said Balvin. "Be happy, fight for your dreams and don't follow societal pressures." He was received by a strendous standing ovation and his record-smashing hits speak for themselves.
