A very personal story on cancer

iMujer: What are the reasons that lead you to promote melanoma awareness?

Genesis: “Skin cancer has affected me personally… Two of my family members were affected by skin cancer… and when I say affected I mean that it was on their faces. Cancer is really scary to me because my family has my same complexion, therefore I could run the same risk… What a lot of women don’t know is that you can tan now and still get cancer 20 years later…”

iMujer: What precautions do you take while tanning?

Genesis: “I love the sun and the beach…so what I do is that I put SPF (100) on my body and 70 on my face. By the time I leave the house I’m wearing a huge hat… When I have to reapply, I do so with a spray… I don’t sit in the sun to get tanned – that’s a number 1 don’t do it!”

iMujer: Do you mix your moisturizer with your SPF or do you use them separately?

Genesis: “I use them separately; I take my anti-aging routine very differently than my SPF… Just because you’re driving doesn’t mean you’re not baking in the sun. A lot of women forget to apply sunscreen on their hands and neck.”

iMujer: When you buy a tanning lotion what are the must haves?

Genesis: “Tanning lotions, I like to apply them with moisturizer, that I do! I exfoliate first leaving really dry skin, no moisturizer prior. I like to use a tanning lotion because I know how to apply it and if you put extra body lotion on your ankles, in between your fingers and cuticles your tanning lotion will go on so smooth.”

Genesis: “Find a doctor that you could feel comfortable with and with who you could talk about anything. Even if people tell you not to worry about a simple mole – that don’t worry about it could cost you, your life.“

iMujer: Every how often should women reapply SPF?

Genesis: “At least half an hour before leaving the house, it dries out quickly. If you’re going to be outside you should reapply.”

iMujer: As a Hollywood actress do you ask makeup artists to apply SPF underneath all your makeup?

Genesis: “Always…They don't ask, is something that they already know... It’s a golden rule because that’s how you keep the Hollywood skin.”

In person and on camera, Genesis’s skin is radiant and has a natural glow; she confessed that other Hollywood actors and actresses don’t bake themselves in the sun to achieve a beautiful tan. Instead, they use tanning lotions or visit a salon to get a spray tan. Tanning beds are just as harmful as the sun; find healthier alternatives so that you could enjoy beautiful skin for many years to come.

Without a doubt, skin cancer is preventable in women. Genesis and L'Oréal Paris teamed up to inform women of the negative effects that the harmful rays of the sun could cause. Every hour almost one person dies of Melanoma in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society the rates of melanoma have been rising during the past 30 years. As a woman you have the right to protect your skin; know the facts.
