TPS for Honduras and Nicaragua was first granted on January 5, 1999, by then President Bill Clinton as part of a humanitarian response from Washington following the passage of Hurricane Mitch through Central America. Since the initial designation, the United States has renewed the statute every 18 months, allowing those with the original TPS benefit to renew their work permits.
