"I'll Be Missing You" was released on May 27, 1997 by Bad Boy Records in memory of Christopher Wallace - a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G. who was murdered on March 9, 1997. The music video was directed by Hype Williams and was filmed in the city of Chicago.

The song "I'll Be Missing You" features samples taken from the rock group The Police - "Every Breath You Take" in 1983. Since the song contains samples from the group The Police, Sting owns 100% of the publishing royalties.

On September 4th at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, lead singer from The Police, Sting, sang alongside Puff Daddy, Faith Evans, 112 and Mase for a special performance of the song.

The song reached the mainstream audience and reached number one at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
