When it comes to our home, we typically focus on organization, cleaning and decor. Cleaning and organization go hand-in-hand. With those two also comes throwing things out.

For the most part, we throw out things like clothing we may not  be using or things we consider junk, but there are items we may not realize should be thrown out and replaced frequently.

7. Plastic Tuppers.

Good news for those of you who hate having a mess of plastic tuppers in your kitchen cabinets. These items, though very handy, can be quite dangerous to keep for long periods of time.

It’s said that plastic containers made before 2010 may contain BPA, which isn’t very good for your health. So go ahead, throw them out and replace them with glass containers.

6. Scratched nonstick pans

I think we’ve all been guilty of holding on to our favorite nonstick pans. I wouldn’t let mine go because it was the only pan that could fry an egg to perfection.

I threw mine out after learning, that the parts of the pan that are flaking off, are going into your food and then into your body. It seems harmless but those flakes can contain many chemical whichare unsafe for ingestion.

5. Kitchen Sponge

Now this one should be a given. Not only do sponges deteriorate after time, they also harbour tons of germs and bacteria. It doesn’t matter how many cleaning solutions we use to disinfect it, sponges should be replaced very often.

3. Toilet brush

We use these brushes to clean our toilets. Though we use cleaning products alongside these brushes that may help disinfect, they typically stay wet after they are used.

A way to prolong replacing this item is by drying brushes in the sun. Once you’re ready to put the brush away, it will be nice and dry.

2. Pillows

Pillows are the best for having a comfortable and restful night. Even if we wash our pillow cases frequently, many aren’t aware that washing the pillow itself  is also very useful. Pillows can easily fill up with dead skin cells, drool and even dust mites!

Your pillows should be changed every six months to a year depending on your cleaning habits. You can also prevent your pillows from filling up with icky stuff, by using a protective cover alongside frequent washing.

1. Liquor

This one I wasn’t expecting. Check your bar area or wherever you store your liquors. If the bottles are unopened, then there’s nothing to worry about. However, pay close attention to open bottles of dairy-based liquors, these tend to go bad sooner than other spirits.

When it comes to bottles of gin, rum and vodka, the alcohol in these bottles may begin to vaporize after about six months. Another thing to consider is that after the six month period, the sugars in these spirits may begin to crystallize. It can vary depending on the temperature of your home.
