It’s game over for the Avendaños: here’s how their war with ‘El Chapo’ turned out
The war between the Tijuana cartel leaders and Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán was a bloodbath. Here are the most striking moments.

In the third episode of season 2, we were witness to all the steps of Joaquín Guzmán’s revengeon the Avendaño brothers. They had a war that lasted a few years, and these were the main events.

At the beginning of season 1, we got introduced to Benjamín and Ramón Avendaño, the Tijuana cartel leaders. They hurt Joaquín Guzmán’s pride when they refused to work with him and belittled him for not being a ‘patrón’.

In spite of their rejection, ‘El Chapo’ decided to move drugs in their territory without permission. Thus started a long, violent war between the Avendaños and Joaquín Guzmán.

The peace that was left between them was over when Ramón Avendaño murdered Armando López ‘El Rayo’, ‘El Chapo’s best friend, outside a famous club in Tijuana.

For ‘El Chapo’, there was no turning back. Whatever it took, he would avenge his friend, ‘El Rayo’. Joaquín Guzmán and the Avendaños were at war.

While ‘El Chapo’ planned an ambush, Benjamín and Ramón Avendaño plotted to intimidate him and teach him a lesson.

The Avendaños sent a handsome hitman called Rafael ‘El Buen Mozo’ to seduce Guadalupe, Heriberto ‘El Güero’ Palma’s wife. He cut her throat in the middle of an encounter and then killed her children.

This crime unleashed ‘El Chapo’s fury. Ismael, the Sinaloa ‘patrón’, helped him ambush the Avendaño brothers in a Puerto Vallarta nightclub. However, the plan failed and Ramón Avendaño escaped.

‘El Chapo’ was still ready to fight his war, but his plans were thwarted when his enemies got Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas, intending to take him out as well. ‘El Chapo’ was blamed for the murder and became the most wanted drug lord.

While ‘El Chapo’ was in prison, the Avendaños prepared to take control from Amado. They ambushed ‘El Señor de los Cielos’ in a seafood restaurant in Mexico City, but he managed to escape through the back door.

After the attack, Amado decided to get cosmetic surgery to modify his appearance. He died unexpectedly during the procedure, and thus the Avendaños managed tobecome the new allies of the Mexican government.

Ramón Avendaño abused the new power he had been granted and turned the country into a bloodbath by murdering several government officers. This angered the DEA representatives in México, who launched anultimatum to Mexican authorities about the Avendaño Brothers.

Seeking to stop the Avendaño, ‘Don Sol’ asked for Ismael’s help. ‘El Chapo’ took advantage of this situation and tried to negotiate his imminent extradition and his freedom so he could take vengeance against his enemies in the process.

‘El Chapo’s plans took a serious reversal of fortune when the Revolutionary Party lost the election. The agreement to get his freedom had now been ruined, so he started prepping things up to escape the Puente Grande Penitentiary.

The Avendaño Brothers beefed up their security as soon as they found out their nemesis was out of prison. Meanwhile, ‘Don Sol’ and ‘El Chapo’ got together for a new agreement. ‘El Chapo’ would take Ramón and Benjamín out of the way, but he would deliver only one of them alive.

With Ismael and Toño’s help, ‘El Chapo’ blackmailed one of the Avendaño’s most trusted men in order to set up a mortal trap for Ramón on the streets of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, only days before the Carnival.

Without giving him time to react, four hitmen sent by ‘El Chapo’ shot Ramón Avendaño while walking through a crowd. His body lay on the ground, eyes open, looking at the sky.

After the news of his brother’s death, Benjamín Avendaño ordered the assassination of the snitch that sold them to ‘El Chapo’ and moved to one of his safe houses in Puebla, México.

‘El Chapo’ blackmailed ‘El Uno’, leader of the GAFES (Airmobile Special Forces Group) to get them to work for him. His first mission was to locate the exact location of Benjamín Avendaño’s hideout.

‘El Chapo’ gave ‘Don Sol’ information about Benjamín Avendaño’s location in exchange for the government to stop looking for him and stop his extradition process. ‘Don Sol’ used the information to get reinstated in the government, now as Operative Director of the Federal Police.
