Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman is not the only one who wants to control the drug trafficking business, so this is the way the networks of power have been hatched in the series.
Every step the characters of 'El Chapo' take has the same goal: rise to power. Since the beginning of the series the structure of the Mexican government changed. There fore, the organization of drug trafficking has changed too. In 1985 the business of drug trafficking was controlled by Miguel Angel, 'Boss of Bosses'. The leader of Guadalajara cartel was recognized as the head of drugtrafficking in Mexico and had under his command 'lords' who ran the business in different parts of the country.

Amado, better known as 'El Señor de los Cielos', was the lord of Juarez and one of Miguel Angel's closest capos.

At that time 'El Chapo' was not included in the networks of drug trafficking. He was a subordinate in Guadalajara cartel.

Joaquin Guzman was not satisfied yet, because he was an ambitions man. His first goal was to become a lord, so he began working on a tunnel to cross a large amount of cocaine from Colombia to the United States in record time.
