"Immigration: The New Rules"

Sweeping changes to U.S. immigration policy that are causing deep concerns in the Hispanic community will be the focus of a special Sunday night edition of Univision's “Aquí y Ahora” (Here and Now) at 10pm (EDT), titled "Inmigración: Las Nuevas Reglas.”

Hosted by Univision News anchors María Elena Salinas, Teresa Rodríguez and Jorge Ramos, the one-hour special will cover key changes in immigration policy or law enforcement by the Trump administration, such as deportable criminal offenses under the new and wider White House guidelines. Similarly, it will explore the outlook for DREAMers and Central Americans with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and the status of so-called 'sanctuary cities.'

"What differentiates us the most from our English-language colleagues is that our audience expects from us much more than just news. Since I started doing this job there is a public service element that goes hand-in-hand with our reporting," said Jorge Ramos. "Donald Trump has created a lot of fear in the Latino community and our audience needs to know how to navigate his tweets, speeches and half-truths about immigrants," he added.

The program will also examine immigrants’ rights and what actions they can take to protect their families.

"Hopefully every family watching will be able to make a plan in case the worst happens. Also, I hope that we can help children to deal with the fear of deportations," said Ramos.

In a town hall setting, a panel of special guests will lead the discussions and answer questions from studio audiences located in Los Angeles and Dallas. The show will feature more than a dozen cases of undocumented families, including a woman who has lived in the United States since 1989 without papers and has five U.S. born children, a Nicaraguan young man who was placed in foster care after his mother was deported when he was 14, and a 67-year-old man who has lived in the United States more than half his life and was arrested for driving while under the influence 20 years ago.

The panelists include:

- Ezequiel Hernández, 41, a Phoenix immigration attorney who was born in Veracruz, Mexico and came to the United States with his grandmother before he was seven. "We walked thriough the desert and here we are," he says. He was undocumented until he was in law school and identitifies himself as a 'Dreamer' of his generation.

- Ruben Martínez, a former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who retired in 2008 after 32 years working for the federal government. He ended his career as Juvenile Coordinator for the Los Angeles District. He is currently working as a legal assistant specializing in immigration procedures and fraud for a Los Angeles lawfirm.

- Clarissa Martínez-de-Castro, deputy vice presisdent at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) who overseas research and advocacy, including immigration policy. She was born and raised in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.

- Gaby Pacheco, a prominent DREAMer and nationally recognized immigrant rights leader. In 2010, Pacheco and three other undocumented students led the Trail of Dreams, a four month walk from Miami to Washington D.C. She emigrated with her family from Ecuador in 1993 at age eight.

- Xavier Becerra, California's Attorney General and former Congressman.

The event will stream on Facebook Live and will continue for a live, online-exclusive second hour beginning immediately after the television broadcast ends. Additionally, during the program, viewers will have the opportunity to interact with a team of immigration attorneys who will be answering their questions via social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
