The story every woman should know before visiting a museum

Let’s take a moment to travel back in time so that you could fully understand why women are being portrayed as sex symbols. ―During contemporary times, social media, advertising and a lot of what you see on Television isn’t exactly promoting women in the most “flattering” ways. Most of the time, there is something sensual circumnavigating whatever it is that you’re watching.

Venus of Willendorf

A tiny figurine that is at least 25,000 B.C.E., years old depicts what is believed to be a woman with oversized breasts and glutes. Does this look familiar? In modern times, artists and people through the use of Photoshop and plastic surgery have continued to “recreate” what our ancestors started over 30,000 years ago.

However, there is so much more! Scroll down and find out…

How Egyptians have influenced you

In history, you’ll learn that Egyptians influenced Greek and Roman sculptures. For instance, both Greek and Romans created small sculptures and so, the Egyptians taught them how to create even larger ones. Consider that during the 21st century many people continue to be amazed by the amazing creations such a civilization was able to build with so little resources and no technology.

With a desire to represent the sacred, artists began to feel influenced by religion. As an example, humans were made by God and therefore are a reflection of his image. Taking this into consideration artists began to create pieces as Godly as possible. However, Egyptians were not creating figurines such as the Venus of Willendorf.

In Greece

The Greeks were the first to use eyes in their sculptures and so, their art began to look more realistic. However, this didn’t last for a long time as it began to look “boring”… Therefore, exaggeration was implemented into their work. As an example, Michael Angelou created sculptures that looked more than human (take a look at the video to see).

Not a lot has changed

As previously mentioned, throughout the course of history ―civilizations have been influenced by people who existed and depicted art in their very own way. As an example, when you look at most reality television shows how are most women portrayed? Think of the many celebrities who have promoted plastic surgery; any ideas yet?

Why do you think this is? Here’s a simple answer: because it is believed to be “beautiful”. The Greeks through their art, believed that people were perfection within nature.
Always remember how humans made art and how art made us human. A lot of what you see today, is not quite new. In order for you to understand what is going on right now, it is always important to first, understand the past.
