A new YouTube viral-video shows a young woman interpreting Eminem’s "Lose Yourself” in sign language. For a bit over 5 minutes, the way most internet users explored YouTube and the internet was transformed. People with a hearing disability were able to understand and feel the music, while losing themselves in the moves of a girl who made so many people feel good.
The viral video, is an excellent example for so many women who live and deal -on a daily basis- with a disability.
Miss America and the first deaf title holder
Whether it may be that you feel sad or self conscious about an impairment; take the example of Miss America 1995, Heather Whitestone who lost her hearing at 18 months.
Having a disability wasn’t an obstacle for Ms. Whitestone, the first deaf title holder in the pageant. While competing she was asked how “society” could remove the barriers that limit us from realizing our full and unique potential. Gracefully, she explained to the world how having good attitude gets her through hard times and that believing in herself allows for her to overcome obstacles.
Believe in yourself and embrace who you are. Because, just as Eminem raps about in his song “ Lose Yourself “ - “… you can do anything you set your mind to…”
