Selena Gomez is ready to set the record straight about what she calls the "really difficult time" she went through last year. In August, Gomez, 24, told fans that she was taking time off to focus on herself, revealing that she suffered from lupus and was having symptoms of anxiety and depression, which can be side effects of the disease.
Right around that time, Netflix was beginning production on 13 Reasons Why, which is based on the hit YA novel dealing with bullying, emotional abuse, depression and anxiety. Gomez is executive producer.
"I was actually going through a really difficult time when they started production," the singer-actress told reporters Wednesday at a Netflix press event. "I went away for 90 days, and I actually met tons of kids in this place that we're talking about a lot of the issues that these characters are experiencing."
During those 90 days she gave up her phone and abstained from social media, and Gomez remains tentatively on the sidelines even now. She said: "It's hard right now. I can't stand social media, I can't stand what they're looking at. I can't stand what they think is reality, and this show is real as it could possibly get."
13 Reasons Why premieres on Netflix in March.
