Former San Antonio mayor Lila Cockrell dead at 97

The first woman mayor of San Antonio and the first woman to lead one of the United States' top 10 largest cities has died Thursday.

Cockrell served four terms as mayor from June 1, 1989 till June 1, 1991 and served a decade on San Antonio's City Council. Cockrell had left a huge impact on San Antonio with being behind the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River andd organizing Hemifair 68' for the World's Fair.

Cockrell was the driving force that attracted Valero Energy to set up their headquarters here in San Antonio.

After retirement, Cockrell continued to serve her community in numerous ways, being the President of the San Antonio Parks Foundation was one of them for many years.
