The people of Portsmouth, Virignia are showing their love for their hometown hero in a big way.
An official petition on change.org is calling for the removal of a Confederate monument in Olde Towne and replacing it with one of their own: Missy Elliott. Elliott was born in Portsmouth on July 1, 1971 to humble beginnings. Her parents worked as a local dispatcher at a power company and a welder at the naval shipyard. Elliott eventually grew up to become a Grammy-winning rapper and record producer.
According to the website, the case has been presented to Mayor John L. Rowe, the Vice Mayor Paige Cherry and several local council members. From what it seems like, the request has plenty of public support. Over 25,000 people have signed the online document in support of the bill.
The local govenment has yet to respond to the petition.
Elliott is known for her hits such as 'Gossip Folks' 'Lose Control' and 'Work It.'
