Creativity is something almost everyone wishes upon their children. To be able to take something so simple and turn it into something a little more sophisticated is valuable. Not every person is born with this gift, but we can teach our children how to be a little more creative. Creativity in children is so important and definitely a gift.
From a young age I noticed that my son was exceptionally creative. He’d make toys out of sticks, create worlds and universes all on his own. And just hearing him talk and interact with toys was simply fascinating! After seeing how explorative and imaginative he was on his own I wanted to know how to culture that and allow him to grow.
Here are five tips on raising creative kids.
#1. Encourage Imagination
So many children these days have lost the true value of using their imagination. Imagination is not something that can be bought, it’s natural and somewhat learned. Your child should be encouraged to use their imagination when they play. A couple of decades ago not everyone could go out and buy everything they needed to make their “play time” complete. You can encourage your child’s imagination by reading them books and even getting involved in their play time.
#2. Encourage Learning
Instead of hours in front of video games and television, it’s time to encourage your child to learn. Take educational trips to parks, zoos, and museums to help feed your child’s creative side. Make learning fun and an incredible experience. It’s also wise to discover what your child loves, so you can incorporate that into their learning. A child who loves to learn will also love to be creative. They can apply their creativity to projects and learning theories. In other words, help your child build mental muscle, so they have the power and desire to be creative.
#3. Don’t Be Controlling
A child can’t learn to be creative if they’re always being controlled. Let your child make mistakes, be messy, and learn some concepts on their own. Living by too many rules can hinder anyone’s creativity. Make sure you let your children be kids and this is sure to help you raise creative children.
#4. Productivity Isn’t Everything
When you are raising children, sometimes it seems to be all about the productivity and not all about the process. Children were meant to be children for a reason. While it’s important to teach kids the value of chores and responsibility, it’s also important to encourage them through play and the value of being engaged in the process. Children learn to be creative through their experiences. Are you allowing your child the chance to be creative?
#5. Experience Boredom
You were not created to fill your child’s every empty moment. Children need to learn to entertain themselves. This doesn’t mean you should never sit down to play with your children; This just means that if you have something going on, then your children should be able to entertain themselves. This is where they need your permission to be creative, a little messy, and this is also a point where you relinquish a little control. Some parents may get lucky and automatically have creative children who do things on their own, but other parents need to feed their children’s creativity. Use these tips to help raise all of your children to be a little more creative.
