Traveling with newborns does not have to be a painful experience by any means. It can actually be a much easier experience than traveling with an older baby or toddler because newborn babies sleep for 16 to 18 hours a day. If you haven’t traveled with your newborn and are considering cruising, flying or traveling by train, pay attention to these 4 essential travel tips that will help you during your journey with your little bundle of joy. Remember that everyone is a beginner at some point when they have a new baby, so allow yourself, as a parent, to learn, grow and live the dream of traveling abroad with them.
Make Time For Sleep, Including You
Sleep is extremely important when traveling with newborns. It is important to give yourself and the baby the gift of sleep when you are trekking across the world so you can both feel alert, healthy and calm. Babies and small children desperately need their sleep when traveling as it tires them out.
Keep Your Cool At All Times
Whether you are a patient person or not, it is very important to remember that travel is unpredictable. You must go into travel with an open mind, be flexible and be extremely patient if you are traveling with a newborn baby. If your baby starts crying at 36,000 feet high up in the sky, try to be calm and assess the situation. Ignore the judgemental eyes on the plane that watch you as you try to comfort your baby. Personally, I find that many people are understanding when they see a mother trying to comfort their child on a flight and I have been offered great support from flight crews and passengers.
A Full Tummy Before Travel Goes A Long Way
Whether you are breast-feeding or feeding your newborn formula, make sure you feed your little one before embarking on any journey. A newborn with a full tummy is a newborn that settles down and sleeps. Make sure you have extra formula or breast milk with you during your travels to your destination. A motto that every parent with a newborn should live by is, “always be prepared”. I always have a few bottles of formula with me every time I travel for that “hungry newborn” moment.
Wipes, Diapers and Soothers Galore!
It is imperative that you have everything your baby needs while you are traveling. This can include anything from a warm hat, blanket and baby-friendly sun block to baby wipes, receiving blankets and diaper rash cream. You can buy many lotions, creams and baby body washes in ‘airplane approved’ standard size bottles now.
Traveling with a newborn can go smooth if you are prepared and flexible. Trust in your mommy instincts and ignore any passengers that may want to add their two cents on child care. And remember, the more you keep your cool, the more your baby will too!
