Kids are like sponges, and even when you think they aren’t paying attention to what you are doing, they are. You can be the best example for your child in a variety of ways. From healthy exercise and eating, to showing kindness to strangers, to being a loyal friend… You can teach them numerous skills at a very young age.
Giving to People in Need
By giving to people in need, your kids will learn to appreciate what they already have. If you show your kids that it is good to offer your help to others when they are having a tough time, they will learn that kindness is very important. If you work with charities, food drives or volunteer in a nursing home, take them along. They will have a better understanding of how important it is to help others in need.
Being Kind and Sharing with Others
When you are out and about, your children will listen to the way that you talk to other people. If you greet people with a cheerful approach and are polite, they will learn the same tools. Communication skills are very important for those young and old, and if your little ones get off to a good start in learning how to converse with others, they will make friends more easily and be able to build long-term healthy relationships.
Teaching then Healthy Eating and Exercise
If you go to the gym on a regular basis or play sports, eat healthy fruits and vegetables and take care of yourself, your children will learn to as well. If you smoke, drink excessively or do any recreational drugs in front of them, this can be very dangerous as they may pick up the same habits. By taking care of your health and your well-being, your kids will notice it, and in turn will make healthier choices for themselves. Participate in healthy activities such as biking, swimming or baseball to get the ball rolling on a healthier lifestyle for the entire family.
Kids tend to pick up on the moods of their parents. They may get nervous and feel out of control if their parent becomes very negative or gloomy. By being positive and showing them the bright side of life’s many roller coaster rides, they will pick up the same attitude. This will help them a great deal when life’s difficult moments cross their path, providing them with the strength to keep moving forward.
Making Time For Play
Make sure your kids see you play too. If you are always working, stuck to a computer and never playing, they may get the wrong idea about adulthood. Once you are an adult, you learn to balance play and responsibilities outside the family such as work. They need to see you have fun too, especially along with them.
Show Them Affection
When children see their parents as affectionate people, they will follow suit. Teach them it’s ok to hug others, hold hands or give them a pat on the back. Hug your kids often so they are comfortable with this type of embrace. A hug is a very powerful action, and your kids will welcome more love and friendships into their lives if they are warm to others.
Be the best example by building a better version of yourself. As soon as you have dealt with your own personal issues or once you take better care of yourself, they will notice and follow your lead.
