Collaboration between entrepreneurs in the USA and Latin America

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced on November 14, 2011, the establishment of La Idea in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Univision Networks, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), and m-Via to support collaboration between local and diaspora entrepreneurs in business development.

Natural ambassadors by virtue of their identities and close linguistic and cultural ties, the potential of the diasporas to transfer skills and develop businesses in their countries of heritage is enormous and remains largely untapped. The Latin America IdEA Marketplace hopes to unleashing that potential and translate this unique knowledge, expertise, and desire into tangible improvements in the lives of people in the countries and communities of their ancestral heritage.

The Latino American Idea (La Idea) partnership is a business enabling and support platform that fosters collaboration between entrepreneurs in the United States and Latin America with the goal of expanding innovative businesses that will generate employment and economic growth throughout the Americas. La Idea will be implemented in the context of the International diaspora Engagement Alliance (IdEA), launched by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at the First Global Diaspora Forum on May 17, 2012.

Latin America's increasing affluence represents a unique opportunity for Hispanic entrepreneurs in the United States. Latin America is one of the world’s most exciting emerging markets, a region with fast-growing economies and a rapidly expanding middle class. The Hispanic community in the United States numbers at least 50 million. This diaspora includes highly skilled and educated entrepreneurs who can serve as an important engine of growth and development in the United States, Latin America, and elsewhere.
