The Kiolbassa Provision Company now sells a variety of smoked sausages and fresh chorizo in Mexico.
A meatpacking and sausage-making company
Some companies announce their specialty in their name, and so it is with Kiolbassa Provision Company, founded in 1949 as a meatpacking and sausage-making company in San Antonio. But the company’s name has another twist. It was founded and is still owned by the Kiolbassa family.
Michael Kiolbassa, the eponymous owner of the Kiolbassa company, first approached the San Antonio Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in 2002. His initial goal was to modernize the company’s manufacturing facility, and he worked successfully with SBDC advisor David Baenziger to secure an SBA 504 guaranteed loan. With an improved plant, Michael saw an opportunity to expand sales into international markets.
In 2005, Michael participated in the UTSA International Trade Center’s Minority Export Training program, gaining in-depth training on topics such as export market entry strategies, pricing, payment methods, and shipping. Senior International Business Consultant Monica Alcoz provided Kiolbassa with market information for his products, distribution channels, as well as with import regulations to get his products to Mexico.
As a result of this training and one-on-one advising, Michael was able to develop an export marketing plan. Alcoz advised her client on the selection of the most appropriate trade shows for his products in Mexico and prepared the budget for all future export marketing expenses.
"From the assistance we received, we made significant progress in exporting our products to Mexico", Michael said. "Monica has been very helpful in introducing export opportunities for us, doing research into markets and helping us build an export program".
The Kiolbassa Provision Company now sells a variety of smoked sausages and fresh chorizo in Mexico. Overall, the company produces about 10 million pounds of sausage a year.
Today, nearly a decade after Michael Kiolbassa first became an SBDC client, he continues turning to our experts for advice. Recently, Alcoz provided the company with updated market intelligence on the sausage industry worldwide.
